Following last year's trend, various scandals and corruption in the entertainment industry and political world have been exposed again this year. Interestingly, many of these scandals were so-called "open secrets." For some reason, these issues had not come to light until now, but suddenly, due to some dynamic, they have become prey for energetic weekly magazines. An open secret usually involves hiding something inconvenient from the public. However, the open secret I am trying to expose this time is quite the opposite?it's about something very good and wonderful being hidden, which makes it a peculiar story. Of course, there are suspicious elements behind it, but first, I want the public to know the good aspects of it, which is why I decided to write this note after a long time. Thus, the tone of this writing is different from usual. The Shimokita Peninsula is the northernmost part of Honshu, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Tsugaru Strait to the west. On the western side of this peninsula lies the village of Sai, and a bit north at the tip of the peninsula is Oma, famous for its one-hook tuna fishing. Nowadays, many people in this area make a living primarily from fishing, but in the past, especially during the Edo period, timber, particularly hiba (a type of cypress), was a major industry alongside marine products in the domain of the Nanbu clan. Saburo Sakai, whom I know, comes from an old family that had been appointed by the Nanbu clan to oversee the forests in Sai village for generations, and he is the protagonist of this secret. Several rivers flow from the interior of the peninsula toward the Tsugaru Strait, one of which is the Ushitaki River, flowing into the Ushitaki Port. During the Edo period, a lot of hiba timber was transported from this port to Osaka and Edo by Kitamaebune ships. About 2 kilometers upstream from the port, the Ushitaki River branches off to the south, becoming what is called Ishiyamazawa, the location of this secret. This area, running roughly north to south, used to be densely forested with hiba trees on both sides, but now, due to the development of a fine national road on the eastern side, there are almost no hiba trees left. However, on the western side, when I visited about four years ago, it was still a forest covered with thick green leaves. It was hiba. In fact, this is Japan's largest hidden and only remaining hiba forest, making it an open secret. This forest covers about 560,000 tsubo (approximately 185 hectares), comparable to the size of a golf course. According to a tree survey conducted by the Iwaizumi Forestry Cooperative in Showa 10 (1935), about 50,000 hiba trees were standing. This number is extraordinary, and I speculate that about half of the remaining hiba in Japan might be in this forest. Moreover, most of these trees are 300 to 400 years old, with trunk diameters exceeding 50 cm, making it a precious forest that could be considered a national natural monument. Since it was already in such a state 90 years ago, the trees must have grown even larger by now. Typically, Japan's three great beautiful forests are the Kiso Hinoki, Akita Sugi, and Aomori Hiba. Due to overharvesting, the remaining beautiful forests are quite limited, and the hiba trees are thought to be almost extinct. This is because the existence of this magnificent hiba forest in Sai village has not been made public. I was asked by Mr. Sakai to investigate for four years, and I believe I have almost uncovered the reasons behind this mysterious situation. This note is not to reveal those reasons but rather to inform the public of the existence of such a wonderful hiba forest. To my knowledge, the only people aware of this forest, aside from the locals, are a few investors and some officials from the Forestry Agency who are still disputing the ownership with the government. It is no exaggeration to say that a national treasure is being hidden by the government itself. Since last year, I have felt outraged that this unnatural situation is being left unaddressed and have tried to make the existence of this hiba forest known to the media. Last August, an article titled "The Floating Hiba Forest" partially covered the issues of this forest (Asahi Shimbun). However, since there has been no movement to expose this open secret further, I decided to write this note. I have appealed to various related organizations and weekly magazines about the need to investigate and cover this hiba forest, but I have received no response. Although only a few dozen people might see this note annually, it is a start. I hope those who read this note will help in exposing this open secret. (This English translation is based on Chat-GPT) |
